Third Estate

Page history last edited by Alyssa Schnell 15 years ago

Back in france in the late 1700's during the french revolution 95% of people belonged to the 3rd estate. The worst off of all the estates (rankings) in France. Modern people are now known as 3rd class.  Commoners were the people who belonged to 3rd estate. Nobles and wealthy, or powerful people belonged to 2nd estate. The clergy men (leaders of church) belonged to 1st estate. Many who belonged to the 3rd estate sold food, were teachers, farmers, or even housewives.

It was hard to live a life as a commoner you were constantly taxed and taxes were raised all the time. The commons were slowly being taken away. The king sold the commons for his own gain. This took a lot away from the 3rd estate people. There livestock could no longer graze or exercise. This ment unhealthy animals and loss of food. Commoners had little money for there necessities such as food, linins, cooking supplys, and even mortgage because of the high taxation from the king. This lead to death, homless, and starvation. When the representatives of the 3rd estate went to financle meatings with the king, would constantly try to lower taxes or raise job incomes, but no mercy was placed upon them by the king. The king insisted all was fine and considered none of there proposals. Soon the 3rd estate became so persistant that they were banned from all financle meetings, siezing all opportunities for the commerners to regain loss of debt.

The commoners were known to live in small hut like houses made from wood or dried mud. There would be a small kitchen big enough for one and a small child. There would be about 1 or 2 bedrooms only big enough for a bed and a small trunk for clothes. The living room filled the rest of the small home. This room the families spent the most time in. It was usually a bit bigger then the rest of the rooms mainly because more than one family would live in a house. Friends or relatives would live together to save money. Even though 20 million people in france were commoners it was no easy life to live!
